- A topic sentence is like an umbrella for the whole paragraph. All the sentences in the paragraph should give information about and support the topic sentence.
- Make sure you write an actual topic sentence, not just an idea or a phrase.
Just because you are not automatically the best at a subject does not mean you cannot learn it. Everyone has different strengths, and no one is good at everything. However, if you keep working when you struggle with a subject, you will get better, and you will understand the concepts. For instance, I have always been good at things like reading and writing, and these skills are easy for me to improve. Math, on the other hand, is a different story. I remember sitting in calculus class in high school, surrounded by my friends, with the teacher writing away on the board while they nodded their understanding. I was in tears because I did not see the relationships between the numbers, but when the information was explained to me in words and ideas, I was able to grasp the concepts. I was never the class whiz, but I got better, and I passed, and I was proud when I learned.
Now it's your turn to write a paragraph with a topic sentence and supporting information. Your paragraph should be at least eight sentences long.When you look at the sentences in your paragraph, every one should in some way support the topic.

ReplyDeleteThe evolution of the computer has changed dramatically in the past fifty years. The first computer was designed in the late 1890's and it was made out of wood. The computer looked more like an instrument than a computer. The next design of a computer was more complex but was difficult to use. It was built in the 1950's and used a computer language. Later in 1962 the first computer game was invented on the computer. Then in 1969 the internet was first invented. Today in our modern time people use computers such as Apple with advanced technology to socialize, create art and even do school work.
ReplyDeleteOnce you graduate from High School, the real life world finally opens up in front of your eyes. As you pick classes and schools to go to, it’s going to affect your life in the future. For instance, I have recently graduated from high school, just full of pride that I was the first one in my family to graduate high school. But reality finally hit me, which I have to continue my studies with all my friends leaving to other schools. I have to find out what I want to do with my life. From this point of my life, there no turning back, just keep moving forward with the best intentions ahead of me.
ReplyDeleteIf everyone took the time to set goals for classes, they would be a more successful student. For example, setting goals towards a certain class could help your overall motivation to do homework, participate in class, and study for quizzes and tests. In addition, anyone who would like to do well on a certain test or quiz would be more successful if they sat down and set a goal on what grade they wanted, figured out what they needed to do to get that grade and worked hard to accomplish their goal. Everyone could benefit from setting goals and following on them because when you set goals for yourself you’re more inclined to do the work. As a result, everybody should set goals for themselves and follow through on them because it will make them more successful.
ReplyDeleteLiving in non- English speaking countries is a very exciting and challenging experience in life. Local foods, language, and cultures are just some of the major differences. I lived in three different non-English speaking countries, and it dared me a lot to learn their local language and to understand their customs and culture. Local friends who can speak English are advantageous to practice speaking with them. But it is more practical if you speak with the local people, like the vendors or people you meet in the street to talk and practice with them. In this case, you will dig into your mind of what vocabularies you have learned, and finding ways to explain what you wanted to say. In some cases, customs differences sometimes lead to misunderstanding, but you will come to realize and gain understanding about their customs. Adapting culture and lifestyle of one’s country is an unbeatable experience I’ve got.
ReplyDeleteWorking out not only makes you look better, but keeps your body healthy, boosts your confidence, and gives you more energy. Most people today say they don’t have enough time to go workout, but yet they wonder why they don’t have enough energy, or don’t feel good about themselves. If you just go lift lightweights, go for a run or even a walk I guarantee that you will be energized and feel more confident. I remember when I had no energy, my confidence was low, and I didn’t like what I was becoming. It was my freshmen year, I weighed 180 pounds, I had chipmunk cheeks, and not very many friends. I would find myself waking up halfway through my classes, my grades were slipping, and I would just go home and play videogames. About halfway through the year, I really thought to myself, Is this really who I want to be? So, I made a promise to be myself again. I went to the gym every day and during my sophomore year I lost about 40 pounds. I went to the gym just about every day up to today. I have more energy to go outside, I made a lot of friends, and I loved my life now that I was my self again!
ReplyDeleteMusic is the best entertaining mode one can have. Either you want to have fun or just reduce stress; you can always listen to music. I personally enjoy listening to music everywhere I go whether I’m in the car, cleaning, showering, and even in family functions like parties. I take great delight in the different kinds of rhythms, lyrics, and artist. Music is everywhere if you think about it. It’s is just a matter of one’s taste and what they like. There are so many artists as well as rhythms one can appreciate. I don’t think there is anybody out there that doesn’t enjoy listening to music. It’s just a universal thing everyone likes to do.
ReplyDeleteJust because I like English doesn’t exactly mean that I like to write. Actually I think English is one of my weaker strengths and that is the subject I need most help in. I would rather read than write that’s just what I would prefer. A reason that I like English is because in my senior year of high school I read two great books by Shakespeare that I absolutely fell in love with. I can remember how my English teachers would have us read out different parts, and let us be our own character which to me was a privilege I just wish writing could be that easy. I always got into character when I read my characters lines it put me in their shoes. English to me was like learning to tie my shoe which at the time was very differulcult. All the steps you had to do had to be done right or your whole paper would be messed up and you would have to start all over again. Writing isn’t everybody strongest strength especially not mines but soon I will get a refreshing way of how to be a better writer when I learn new writing skills.
ReplyDeleteWhen i became a parent it was the best thing in the world to happen to me.Im the mother of five beautiful children,four boys and one girl.Being a mother is a full time job,from the time they wake up until bedtime,but the joy its bring to me i would not want to change anything.Our day starts at six in the morning and from the time they wake up until the time they go to bed,i hardly ever have time for myself.After breakfast is served,it,bath time and after that im trying to get the school kids dressed and out the door and off to school.After they are off to school im trying to get to get to two younger ones prepared for daycare,once they are dropped off my play time begin so off to work i go.Im usually off work by three just in time to met my older children at the bus stop and i dont know if im more happier to see them or them to see me,but it is a good feeling to see the smile on there faces when im waiting.
ReplyDeleteFacilities given in the Elgin Community College motivate students to join the college. This college has so many facilities for the students. Especially for the international students and this college is little cheaper if compare to other colleges. Most of the student who are far from the library in their community they can use college library to complete their assignments and home work. From library students can borrow books and Cd’s if they need for any classes. In college they also have a food court from where you can buy food. It has the free drop in tutoring for the students which is very helpful.
ReplyDeleteJust because you are not the captain of your sports team, doesn’t mean you cannot be the best player. When I was younger I always wanted to be one of the three captains on the football team who walked out on to the field before the game for the coin toss. I was never chosen to do so. I now realize you didn’t have to be a captain to be the best player. I led the team in touchdowns that year. Making myself a star of the team, this proves my point of you do not have to be a captain to be a star. The captain isn’t always the best player, but the most vocal and a leader.
ReplyDeleteJust because you can’t shoot a basketball into a hoop doesn’t mean you can’t learn how to. Everyone has different skills and weaknesses not everyone is perfect. You can easily pick up a ball and just start shooting around. I on the other hand I’m very good at baseball, I was never great at baseball but I’m decently good. My friends on the other hand are great at basketball, so I wanted to start playing pick-up games with them, so I just went home and practice shooting around from different angles. I now had the idea on every shot that I took and every shot I should take it in order where to make it from. Now I can play a really good game and eight times out of ten ill make the shot now.
ReplyDeleteJust because I’m a young mother doesn’t make me any less of a mother. Even though I’m young, I work hard to take care on my child. I play and run around with him on a daily basis. I help with coloring and learning his grammar and math. As a young mother I’m still learning as I grow and I make sure to put the knowledge I have towards what I teach him. My youth gives me the advantage of being able to have the energy he puts off so that I can keep up with him. I teach him the new ways of our generation and help teach him to build the skills he will need in his growing generation. Things always change and being young I can keep up with them and absorb the information and help explain it to him. Age has nothing to do with being a parent and I’ve learned that because of being young it makes it no harder or easier. I’m proud to be a young mom supporting my son and our family.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite sport is boxing. Since I was little I remembered watching my family getting together to watch a boxing fight. Since then my interest for boxing started. I always liked boxing because of the adrenaline I fell when I’m watching it. When a good fight is announce I can’t wait to see it. I like most of the boxers. I don’t have a favorite fighter. I like to go to the internet and check for upcoming fights. One of the fights that I’m waiting for is Martinez vs Chaves. I know that when the bell rings my heart will start pumping. Boxing for me is more than a sport. It’s part of my life because I always have watched it and I love watching it.
ReplyDeleteBeing the oldest sibling of the family can be great, sometimes it come with a lot of responsibles.I have one brother name Lloyd and one sister name Nicole.I always in charge and the boss of the younger sibling when my mother is not at home.I one thing like about being a oldest sibling my youngest sibling come to me for advice before they go to my mother.What don't like about being the oldest sibling like shared my stuff like the computure or foods.Things I have do being oldest sibling is cooking, cleaning, do laundry and pay bills.Talking to the younger slibing can be hard sometime takes oldest slibling put them in right the directon.
