Writing Challenges and Goals for 098

You want to succeed in English 098, and I want you to succeed! On many days when you come into class, there will be a blog post waiting for your comments. Sometimes the post will be related to readings we are doing. Other times, the goal of the post will be to help you clarify and focus your ideas for a paper we are composing. In all cases, you are expected to do the following:

First, contribute at least six sentences of your own ideas and content as a comment. That means you do not wait until almost everyone else has posted before you simply repeat what others have said. Second, make sure that we read your comment before you post it so that you are sure you have made an on-target response and that you also have the opportunity to make changes before posting.

Please comment on and give feedback to your classmates on their postings so they can improve. The goal is to create a non-judgmental and productive community of writers. The more we all write, the better we can become.

Here we go: This post has two parts. First, tell us about your favorite movie. Why is it your favorite? If you were to recommend it to someone else, what kind of specific information would you give so that the person would really want to watch it? Second, tell us about what kinds of things you like to read and why. You should not worry about sounding academic or intellectual. Maybe you read Life & Style magazine. Maybe you read apocalyptic literature. Maybe you read comic books. Maybe you read scientific journals because you love the concept of transhumanism.

Here's my sample comment which shows you the length and detail required.

My favorite movie is the original version of The In-Laws. I don't know how many times I've watched this film over the years. It's about a son and daughter from two very different families who are getting married. One father is an international spy (which everyone doubts until the end), and the other is a dentist. It's a hilarious comedy with great timing and amazing performances. There are so many genuine human emotions expressed through the film, but they're handled in funny ways. The movie definitely makes its point about judging people on first impressions and taking chances, but it does so in a forgiving and lighthearted way. It's as if the whole underlying point of the movie kind of sneaks up on the audience.

In terms of reading, although you would expect me to read contemporary or older classics, aside from student papers, I typically read two kinds of things. First, I read The New York Times and The Chicago Tribune because those two newspapers represent my two homes. Plus, the stories give me many ideas for readings and assignments in my classes. Second, I am a huge mystery fan, and mysteries come in many forms: cute and neat, bloody, scary, other-worldly, and totally absurd, to name a few. I don't even really care "who done it." What interests me is how the plot, characters and setting unfold.

Now it's your turn. . .

  1. My favorite movie is 500 days of Summer. I would say it's my favorite because it's filled with comedy, love, sadiness and happiness. The main character Tom falls in love with a girl named Summer but she doesn't believe in love so she tells Tom that they can't be in a relationship with each other. Later in the movie though, their views change about love. The movie is very funny at first when Tom and Summer first meet and it ends in a warm hearted way.
For my favorite book I would say is 13 reasons why. It's a mystery about a girl's death and she sends out tape that is delivered to each person on her list of why she killed herself. The book has a lot suspense and I couldn't keep it down when I was reading it.

  2. I love the kind of movies that you have to watch a few times to fully understand everything that happens. I think my favorite movie for that would be Inception. I watched this movie just about once or twice a week this whole summer. There is this military program called "Inception" which let soldiers train with eachother in dreams and if you were to die you just wake up. The movie is about a man who is blamed for the death of his wife and he's in debt with a corporation that wants him dead. He meets another man of a huge oil company and is given the opportunity to start over and have his slate wiped clean, but only if he does one thing. He has to plant an idea using "Inception" into the owner of the oil monopoly to split up the company. The whole idea of the movie was crazy, going into people's dreams without them knowing! It's action packed, is full of questions and mystery about his wife or if hes really dreaming?

For reading, I dont read too much, but when I do it's usually my Gameinformer magazine. I love videogames and i spend a good couple hours reading about new ones to come, reviews on recently released ones, or even retro games! If anyone is an avid gamer I'd highly recommend this to you.

    1. The movie inception is great, but it's very confusing. I'm still confused at the end of the movie if he was dreaming or if he was back in his normal life.

  3. My favorite movie is I Am Legend. I've seen this movie at least twenty times since it came out. Its about a military soilder who loses his family and everybody he cares about due to a disease he is immune to. As the disease spreads it starts affecting people's systems and turns them into zombie like creatures. Eventually it seems like everbody is wiped out except for him. It is a great dramatic performance by will smith that has a excellent ending that will shock you. This film shows you diffrent views of life without friends or family or really anyone to talk to. It makes you think about what you would do if you were the last man or women on earth.

As far as reading, i enjoy all types of genre's such as classics, biographies, mysteries, influentual, and many more. I just love to read so if i see a cover or title that jumps out at me i usually tend to read it. I love books that can make me lose myself in the reading and that shocks me with its ending.

  4. My favorite movie is a Christmas story. It is my favorite movie because I am a comedy movie type person. I love funny movies, and a Christmas story is a classic comedy. The part I would mention that would make somebody else want to watch it would be the part when the mom put all those clothes on the little brother, he had on so much winter stuff on he couldn’t put his own arms down then what made it funnier was that the mom still kept the clothes on him and she was like just put your arms down at school.

In terms of reading books, I like reading books that make me want to read more because I don’t really like reading but I will especially when I get kind of bored. Like Keisha’s drama was a great book. Reason why I like this book so much is because it has a lot of drama. I like drama but only book drama, it keeps me interested in what I’m reading.

    1. I used to always watch this movie as a kid, it is hilarious, but the kids mom is a perfect example of mine. My mom wouldn't let me get a BB gun because she thought I was gonna shoot my eye out!

  5. I love to watch movies but honestly I don't remember the titles... I will just tell you about the recent movie I have watched. " The Great Gatsby" it was a nice story. It was a story about a very rich guy who wanted to take all the risk just to win the woman he once loved. He like to held a party in his big house, party till morning and invited the woman and her husband. Challenged the woman named Daisy to tell in front of the husband that they love each other. Bus Daisy denied the truth.

Gatsby didn't lose hope and still want to pursue his love to the woman. He knows that the husband is cheating on her. SO he still dating the Daisy. One day Daisy was driving Gatsby's car and accidentally hit a woman. And that woman was the mistress of her husband. She was afraid and worried. But Gatsby took all the blame just to save the woman he love.

One day, he was killed by unknown person who was the husband of the woman who died. When he was buried only three people attended his burial. His friend ( who told the story about Gatsby, his father and attorney.

In life, loving someone too much can bring us in a bad situation. In my opinion it is insanity to put all your love your feelings on someone that you know you can't have her/him in your life. There was a saying goes that love your self first before loving someone else. Or let say give 50% for yourself and 50% for others. I feel sad on his burial because when on the brightest day in someones life people will adore you, love you and praise you. But in times of need they are nowhere. That's makes me feel ready bad.

Book I like to read? Something about life and wisdom. Where I can have knowledge and information about life. It helps and guide me about the journey in life. the negative and positive. For me it is very informative.

  9. My favorite movie would have to be Dumb & Dumber . I watch it probably once week, but it always makes me laugh. The movie is about two men, harry and Lloyd, and lets say there not very intelligent. But they go on a road trip to Aspen, Colorado to drop off a suitcase that a lady left in the airport. But the lady left the suitcase for a reason for a assassin to pick up the money because, the assassin, kidnapped her fiancee. Lloyd drives the wrong way to Colorado and there lost in Nebraska, but Lloyd makes up for himself for trading the truck for a little motorcycle. Once they get to aspen, they are freezing cold with no money and they finally open the suitcase and find out there money in it. They go crazy with the money and spend all the money. Its a funny comedy and it will for sure make you laugh.

I normally read lots of magazines like Sports Illustrated and Time Magazine. I also read New York Times. I like reading this because the Time's and New York Times gives me tons of information about what events are happening in the United States and the rest of the country's.

  10. My favorite movie is Cinderella Man. It’s about the life of James J. Braddock a heavyweight boxing Champion from the 20's.As the great depression enter the United States James Braddock suffer from a broken hand and is forced to give up boxing. His career appeared to be finished; He was unable to pay his bills and had to work with his broken hand to support his family. The time passed and Braddock gets a chance to make a little money he was offered to fill a last minute cancelation fight, the fight was against the number-two contender in the world, Corn Griffin. Everybody believed that James Braddock was going to get knock out, but the surprise was the he knocked out his opponent in the third round. After that fight James Braddock fought for the Heavy Weight Title and he won.

I like to read biographies because it seems very interesting to learn things from people with great knowledge about life and other aspects. What I also like to read are poems because they are short, meaningful and sometimes true.

  11. My favorite movie is Dejavu. I believe I watched this movie a couple of times enough to know what happens during it. I enjoy watching this movie. The movie is about an agent that has to investigate the explosion of a ferry that killed a lot of people and a crime that happened and he travels back in time to save a female from getting killed. This movie contains action, thrill and sci-fi. It’s pretty interesting the way he does it, and you have to pay good attention to it and the details, if not it will leave you wondering during some parts. The movie marks a point of stopping evil.
When it comes to reading I really enjoy reading romance books. They keep me reading into them to find on how, when and why. I Love reading stories about affection. Some are really passionate and call my attention for example Perfect Chemistry, Rules of Attraction, and Chain Reaction all three are written by Simone Elkeles. Those books I finished super quick, and as soon as I was over with one I went on to the next. I enjoyed the story as well as the details in every page.

  12. My favorite movie has to be The Hangover, the original one not the one with the uncut parts and all that extra junk. I can't count on both my hands and feet how many times I've watched it. It is about a guy who is getting married and he goes to Vegas with a couple of his buddies, and everything just goes wrong the night they get there. They have two days to find their friend and get him to his wedding. There is way to many emotions in this movie, mostly funny emotions not so much sad. This movie shows what can happen to you if you get to out of control and you don't know what your "friends" are giving you. This movie will have to laughing at all times.

My reading style is not really geared towards any specific genre, I rather just pick up the newspaper and just read anything in it. I find myself a lot just picking up a magazine, any magazine that's just laying around and I just get lost in it. Sports magazines are probably my top choice or car magazines.

  13. My favorite movie is Avatar I think the story that is told is exciting and interesting. The movie tells of another race and how the world they live in is all connected to every living thing around it.For instance they live in this gigantic tree which provides protection from the dinosaur like creatures that live below it.Although it turns out the avatars really need protection from our human race that is there to mine their planet for a certain mineral that provides a fuel for our planet. The movie has great graphics and vivid color throughout.

  14. So I don't really have "one" favorite movie; My fave kind changes based on how I feel every once in a while. But Recently I've seen The Dark Knight Rises. And for comic book-lover as my self? I can easily say it was one of the BEST. MOVIES. OF. ALL. TIME(I'm being modest)! Oh my God they adapted the comic to the movie so freaking well with the way that Christopher Nolan oversaw casting the actors were perrffeeecccttt. And Joseph Gordan-Levitt pulling that epic plot twist at the end? UHADGRUOIHDU SO GOOD! Even though his name was Blake in the movie and in the comics it's SUPPOSE to be Dick Greyson, that kinda peeved me but whatever. And Tom Hardy (who is extraordinarily attractive) for Bane was sooooo mint! He was in inception and a few other movies and he's a great actor and the way he portrayed Bane in manor that made him exuberantly authoritative and intellectual was so boss. Christopher Nolan (The director, and writer), made this movie with the sole intention of melting my heart. The cinematography was beautiful in it, Christian Bale was as angst-y as ever, and Michael Caine was so perfect I almost cried when he left I wish he was my grandpa. God it was so epic. Fun fact: Christopher Nolan directed Inception. And Tom Hardy was in that, and The Dark Knight Rises. Marion Cottilard was in Inception and The Dark Knight Rises too. In fact so was Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Caine, and so was Cillian Murphy. It was like an epic reunion.

In terms of reading, I love science fiction novels, action, sometimes romance, the occasional bible, comic books, and internet posts. I'm not bound to these literary parameters; I'll read anything that I can't put down. In fact it's not even the genres I care about too much it's the way that authors can tell a story in a brilliant way. I mean you can have a fantastic idea, brilliant characters and witty dialogue but none of it could actually work as a story without a good author. Some of my favorites include James Patterson, John Green, Laura Griffin and Rick Riordan. I love getting lost in a good book, when the character you're reading about becomes more than just words on a page, when an author can create a beautiful landscape out of vowels and consonants is when I'm submerged into a world that I can only hope to be apart of. I also love plot twists, archetypes and characters that I envy/relate to.

  15. My favorite movie is Soul Food. I watch this movie every holidays with my family especially on Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. I would recommend this movie to everybody because it shows how family traditionals are very important. It also shows, they no matter what problems and trials you have as a family; your family still can come together as one. The family tradition in this movie was come together on every Sunday for soul foods dinner. In this movie, the Joseph's family always came together at Sunday dinner no matter what issues they had as a family.

The kind of things I like to read are drama and non-fiction books. First, I like to read drama books because it is entertainment and keep wondering what happen next.Second, I like to read non-fiction books because it show the realities to the daily lives of people. Both drama and non-fiction book are very interest to me because I want to know who, when, why, and how.

  16. One of my favorite movies is Cinderella. The reason i like Cinderella is because the character reminds me of my life. Cinderella is a girl who lives with her step-sisters,and step mother. Cinderella is treated very poorly by her siblings, by making her do all of the chores of the house and putting her down. The part were i relate with Cinderella is that because she was the first daughter of her father she should of been treated fairer, and ironically she is treated as a step-sister, but in my point of view they should all be treated the same by their father and mother. Also Cinderrella is very poor, but her step-sisters aren't, they get to have anything they want. I relate to that part too. Then Cinderella's life changes for good when a fairy god mother rescues her . I will have a happy ending too, but not with a god mother, but by my own will power.

The books that i often read are about fantasies. Last year i read a very good book called Everlost, and it was about these two kids that die, and go in an adventure into a semi after life, in where their main goal is to find the light to move on. What i liked about this book is that it gives you alot of detail, and it makes you see it almost like a movie.
